Excerpt & Giveaway: Almost Dead by Rebecca A. Rogers

Title: Almost Dead
Author: Rebecca A. Rogers
Release date: September 15th, 2013
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal

Book Description:
Seventeen-year-old Flora Mackey is not exactly thrilled to wake up from a car accident and find out she’s a ghost. Making this lifelike hell even worse is being trapped with her arch enemy and collision partner, Laney Tipps. The two normally couldn’t get along if their lives depended on it, but now they have no choice. After recovering from the initial shock of seeing their lifeless bodies—and that they can’t escape each other—Flora and Laney have to find a way out of the twisted, gray realm. But they quickly learn that the farther they stray from their motionless corpses, the weaker they become. Luckily Sara, a spirit guide, shows up to help. Sara informs them they’ll have to wait for someone in their city to die so they can take their place in the land of the living. What’s scarier than waiting in purgatory? Time. If Flora and Laney don’t return to the physical world and leave clues for their families that they’re still alive, they’ll never be found. Which sucks, because once their bodies give out, their souls will be permanently stuck in the afterlife.

About The Author

Since elementary school, I remember being in love with words.  Spelling them, writing them, reading them…I even hang them up around my house.  I think I owe my love of language to my fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Templeton.  I can recall sitting around in a circle in that old, red-brick school, listening to her read aloud Greek mythology.  The oxymoron there was that she was the most prim and proper teacher I ever knew, right down to the white buttoned up blouse held together at the collar with a cameo pin.  The way she read made words come alive.

I had written a few things here and there throughout my life.  I used to think I’d be good at children’s books, and it wasn’t a far stretch since I worked with children every day and knew what they liked.  But then I read the series by Stephenie Meyer, maybe you’ve heard of it…Twilight.  This was the type of story I knew I had to write.  Teenagers were my audience.  It helped I had one at home to learn from.

My idea didn’t come in a dream.  No, I wasn’t that fortunate.  It happened through research.  And lots of it.  The only criteria I had was that I wanted my story to be different from everything else out there.  I wanted my story to stand out.  No vampires or werewolves.  No witches or wizards.  Unicorns were my choice.  And I think the story that unfolded is definitely unique.

Northern Light by E.J. Russell

Nothing gives art fraud investigator Luke Morganstern a bigger rush than busting forgers, the low-life criminals who dare victimize true artists. But when his latest job sends him to a remote cabin in the Oregon Coast Range, he’s stunned to discover the alleged forger is his former lover, Stefan Cobbe, the most gifted painter Luke has ever known.

Stefan, left homeless and destitute after the death of his wealthy partner, doesn’t exactly deny the forgery -- he claims he doesn’t remember, an excuse Luke can’t accept.

But Luke’s elderly client suggests Stefan may be telling the truth and presents another possibility – a dark presence in the woods, a supernatural fury simmering for decades. Luke must face down his fear of the uncanny – and admit his feelings for Stefan – if either of them is to survive.

In return, Cassie steals his heart.

- The Wonderings of One Person - Inteview!
It was actually Shane who came to me first, and I loved his story: Two older brothers who’d met their wives through this witness protection thing – I loved the expectations that came along with it, and knew I needed to write his story.
I also loved the setting on the ranch. The horses and hard labor, the group meals and gatherings, the camaraderie and the way Shane's family adopts everyone who works there or marries into the family.
I loved the times when Cassie and Shane went off on walks, rides, or on a picnic. Just the simple things they did to develop their friendship.

Now, to meet the men competing in the #MrSeptember Throwdown!

Whew! Hot, hot, hot - these men have definitely turned up the heat!

Ian: Wicked Games by Samanthe Beck (part of the anthology)
Grayson: Seducing Mr. Right by Katee Robert (part of the anthology)
Craig: Tempted by His Best Friend by Cari Quinn (part of the anthology)
Derek: Protecting What's Theirs by Tessa Bailey (part of the anthology)
Jett: Wicked Heat by Nicola Marsh
Trick: Dirty Trick by Christine Bell

Here are today’s questions for the men

Question #7: What’s the sexiest fantasy you’ve had about your leading lady?

Ian: Well, there was the shower thing, but we’ve done that. And then there was the Halloween, incognito thing, but we’ve done that too. Then, of course, there was the bondage thing, and, yep…you guessed it…

Grayson: It involved bending her over my desk...

Trick: How much time do you have? Not a lot? I’ll just tell you the dream I had last night, then. We were at a little Italian restaurant tucked into a dark corner. Right when the waiter came over, I ducked my hand under the table and slipped it between Gracie’s legs. She was wearing a skirt but no underwear, and as soon as I touched her, her face went all pink and her eyes got glassy. She was so hot and…*clears throat* anyway, when it was her turn to order, her voice did that sexy little hitch it does? She didn’t move away though. She just sucked in a shuddery breath and asked for a glass of wine. When the waiter left, she looked me dead in the eyes and said “You better be prepared to finish this, buddy. And remember, payback is a bitch.” That was a lie. Because payback? Was fucking mind-blowing.

Derek: I'm working late and she comes into the police station. Dripping wet from the rain. I can tell she's feeling a little desperate for me. Which is perfect, since I'm always desperate for her. As usual, I've been growing restless…I always do when I've been deprived of her too long. Without a word, I walk her to my office and tell her to strip while I look my fill. Then I put her on my desk, where she's been inhabiting my head for hours. Then I make her ask nicely for every thrust of my hips.

Jett: The moment I saw that Kink Kit in Allegra’s hotel suite, I imagined exploring what was in that box with her. Tying her up, teasing her mercilessly…oh yeah, frigging hot.

Craig: Refer to the law firm encounter mentioned above. Steff bent over the counter, her firm, supple body bared to my touch, her moans echoing off the walls... *clears throat* Next question, please.

Question #8: Favorite comfort food?

Ian: Bourbon or whiskey

Grayson: Breakfast food--eggs, French toast, bacon, hash browns.

Trick: Rib-eye steak, medium rare, baked potato with sour cream and butter, creamed spinach on the side, followed by Apple pie with caramel sauce.

Derek: Ginger's chicken pot pie. The way she keeps trying to improve the recipe…she doesn't realize I love it just because she made it.

Jett: Pav. Nothing beats the perfect Aussie pavlova. Meringue base, lashings of whipped cream, topped with strawberries and passionfruit. Best comfort food ever. Plus there’s always whipped cream left over and I can think of many sensual uses for that…

Craig: Pizza at Mama Leone's, with optional garlic enhancements. Ah, the memories.

Out With Old, In With...Cash!

*This is a sponsored post.

If you've never stepped into our home it would be hard for you to know that my husband and I have enough video games and DVDs to start up our own shop.  Friends and family that have visited us can testify to this.  We’re both insanely big on movies and before getting married we each had amassed our own stash.  After the two of us came together, our list of movies have skyrocketed.  I honestly could not begin to tell you all of the movies that we own.  We've been known to buy 5+ movies at one time (if our budget allows) because we randomly felt like having a movie night and hey! That movie looks good!  I heard good things about that one! Now that we have a child, I know that our collection is going to grow exponentially.

This is just what we've collected in the past few months.
And this is even with us watching Netflix/AmazonPrime all the time.

Somehow along the way we have acquired a stack of movies that we don’t want, that we never really wanted.  Movies that we never watch and don’t want to watch.  We even have duplicates.  I know for a fact that we own two identical copies of Pirates of The Caribbean 2; Dead Man’s Chest.

We don’t really live anywhere near a thrift store or a place of that sort that we could sell them at and family members are not eager to take them off of our hands.  I've looked for a while for a way to get rid of the DVD’s (and games, the husband likes to collect and then sell them back) that we no longer wanted and I’m happy to say that I've found a FREE and EASY online service to do so.

MusicMagpie.com is a simple website that is completely free and super simple and easy to figure out.  All you do is enter the bar code (or scan it) and then find out how much your stuff is worth!  You can do video games, CD's and DVDs.  I have a lot of CD's but most of those are old and scratched and I would not put those babies on anyone.

Honestly, I've tried selling my stuff on some online retailers before and it’s pretty complicated in my opinion.  So many hoops you have to jump through.  Not on here though.  You don’t even have to pay anything to send your stuff in because they have a free shipping service.  Sounds great to me.  That's even more money I can save.

I told my husband about Music Magpie and he was just excited as I was.  Our DVD stash is going to get a routine clearing out from now on and we’ll get to make some money while doing it!

Review: Hairstyles of The Damned by Joe Meno

22539
Cover Source: GoodReads.com
Title: Hairstyles of The Damned
Author: Joe Meno
Series:
Version Reviewed: Finished, Paperback
Website: www.joemeno.com

GoodReads Summary:
Hairstyles is an honest depiction of growing up punk on Chicago’s south side: a study in the demons of racial intolerance, Catholic school conformism and class repression. It is the story of the riotous exploits of Brian, a high school burnout, and his best friend Gretchen, a punk rock girl fond of brawling.

I loved this book. It had me interested from the very first page. It's a different type of book than I would normally read, but hey, sometimes when you read out of your comfort zone, you find awesome books! This was definitely one of those cases. I'm sad that I borrowed this novel from a friend my mine and my husbands. I may possibly buy this book in the future.

Hairstyles of the Damned is an honest, real look at adolescence and the trials and tribulations that a teenager goes through in daily life. It is set in the early 1990's, which is a neat setting as we get to learn more about teen life and the thinkings of a lost kid finding his way through school, music, and the punk scene.

The characters in the novel, mainly Brian Oswald, are true representations of what teenagers are like, how they think, speak, and act. Nothing is held back from the readers. The insecurities, embarrassing thoughts, shallow-ness, and hurt, real thoughts, not buttered-up images of what a teenager should be like you would normally read. It's honest and straight forward on how teenagers really are, have always been, and will always be.

There's a lot questionable situations in this novel, a lot of language, and more than enough of sexual confrontation. Some may see that as a bad thing, but for what this novel stands for, it really works. I didn't mind all the bad things because it was true. That's how human beings are, even if we don't want to always admit it.

This book is a good read for any of you that want a real, honest, raw look at young adult life.

Also, on a final note, I've seen some things around the internet that imply that Hairstyles of the Damned is being made into a movie. This is definitely a movie that I would watch and I will update in the future if I find any new information on this.

Memorable Quotes:
"It would always be a put-on, high school or not, for the whole rest of the world, for the rest of our lives. You couldn't ever guess who someone was by the way they looked because, good or bad, the way they looked was always just a costume or an act. It was Halloween everyday, for most people anyway, just to feel like they weren't alone, to belong, just to keep being happy maybe."

Rating: 4 Stars.

Review: Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick

6339664
Cover Source: GoodReads.com
Title: Hush, Hush
Author: Becca Fitzpatrick
Series: Hush, Hush #1
Version Reviewed: ARC, Paperback.

GoodReads Summary:
A SACRED OATH
A FALLEN ANGEL
A FORBIDDEN LOVE
Romance was not part of Nora Grey's plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how hard her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Patch draws Nora to him against her better judgment.
But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is and seems to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For she is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost Nora her life.
I absolutely freaking love this book and recommend it to everyone! I love, love, loved it!

I loved the character of Nora. As the heroin of the novel, she had a lot of fight in her and I really enjoyed that. She didn't take people's crap and she fought back and did her best to protect herself. I loved her.

And Patch. Oh jeesh, Patch. If I had to describe him using only one word, that word would be 'Yum'. He was dark, mysterious, dangerous, wild, and sexy. He was everything I'd want my fallen angel to be.

The book was filled with a lot of mystery, romance, and action. This may possibly be my new favorite series.

Memorable Quotes:
"What good is a body if I can't have you?"
Favorite Character: Patch.
Rating: 5 Stars.
